Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

Exit 145 - SH38/Fillmore Street  aerial picture

This exit is where I-25 bottlenecks to two lanes when heading northbound. This, along with an impossibly short acceleration lane northbound, leads to some hefty backups during the PM rush hour. North of this interchange is a bridge over Ellston street which will either be rehabbed or replaced. New pictures have a grey background under the caption.

Northbound. Goodbye lane 3, hello FREAKING HUGE SH 38 shield.

  • Fillmore Bridge
    Original shot

The traffic sensor to the right of the roadway is here because of the heavy backups this stretch sees.

  • Fillmore Merge
    Original shot

Multiple skidmarks: bad. 500 foot acceleration lane: worse.

  • Fillmore exit

Southbound at Fillmore. The frontage road shares the same intersection with the offramp.

  • Typical newer section

Wider shoulder than usual here. The road will be restriped to a 3+1 configuration during COSMIX.

Any wonder why Colorado Springs was rated extremely high in a "worst traffic for a city of its size" survey?

Eastbound Fillmore's intersection with SB 25. Any questions to where the exit for NB 25 is?

With the restriping of the lanes between Fontanero and Fillmore done, we now get a closure of the left lane. This confuses more drivers than I care to admit.

A little tip from r-dub: since everyone's still used to this lane having to exit, noone uses it and just backs up the middle lane. Stay right, and you'll be better off!

The new lanes now match up with the old.

From new asphalt to old cement. That truck (and us shortly) is driving where no traffic has been before on this cement.

The Fillmore merge lane is now striped as an auxillary lane all the way to Fontanero.

The Holland Park noise wall along the frontage road (Sinton Street) is now complete. This wall is quite smaller than the one directly alongside the interstate.

Cable-stay guardrail has been placed in the median between Fillmore and Garden of the Gods.

Approaching Fillmore from the south. Median work is on the menu today, I see.

The median work is pretty simple today: install cement bases for the cable-stay guardrails that will be installed here.

Since the whole Nevada Ave. wasn't closed (look ahead 2 pics), the crews updated the sign. Still that crappy font, tho.
