Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

hours with a 5 year old

May 8, 2007: I was asked to accompany The Skirt's mom and young sister on a trip to see her family in Boise, ID. Since I didn't have anything going on at the time, and I rarely will turn down a roadtrip, I said yes. We had to compromise the roadgeek's credo of exploring the roads to get the five year old there and back as quickly as possible. On the way up, we traveled mostly at night, so I only have one picture of the trip up. On the way back, though, we left at 6am. The picts show the trip back.

Are we there yet?

Rolling right along here. The little one's asleep now, and there's not a whole lot keeping me awake now, either. This is a long drive.

Serious grades await us here. The third lane lasts for just over three miles.

Then we come right down from the ridge.

I think we have a winner on the most confusing sign contest.

Here's that sign blown up. Whaaaaa?

Methinks the Loop designation is a little redundant.

Now they're getting serious.

After the Lyman exit, 80 heads up a pass. It snowed here recently, can you tell?

Cool looking hills.

Heading back down from the pass. The billboard is for Little America, which makes a great break point. Especially the 50 cent ice cream cones.

These workers were filling a pothole big enough for one of them to lay down flat in.

And then, all of a sudden, scenery appears out of nowhere! Now entering Green River, WY. If you head south past the Flaming Gorge Recreation area, you'll eventually hit Green River, UT.

I think Green River needs to share some of this scenery with the rest of Wyoming so we have something to look at and photograph.

Nice rock formation. I'd say I'm sorry about the sign, but since this is a roadgeek site...

Large arrows are happy to see us.

Approaching some tunnels. The VMS's bottom line was flashing 65.

We're going in!

That's a lot of electrical conduit.

I think I found a job I wouldn't enjoy.

Looking out the right side of the car. That's the I80/US30 business route in the foreground.

Continuing to head east.

Looks like the abandoned alignments of the railways get somewhat preserved, too.

Even more construction! This time, we're moving over to the westbound lanes.

I guess it's cheaper to make a 15 label and pay someone to move the sign than make a completely new one.

At the construction-altered exit 102.

So what's all the hubbub about? I guess the bridge sucked.

Crossing over US 191.

More two lane goodness. Rock Springs is a pretty good sized town, considering.

I still find it funny that WyDOT uses scrap plywood for their signs.

Another stopping point if needs be.

A sighting of the specimen "Rockus Cutus" for your viewing pleasure.

Wyoming also uses different state highway shields on their guide signs. The standalone shield has the bucking bronco rider silhouette in the bottom center.

Another small rise to crest.

The highway travels right by some cliffs for a while. We're about 8 miles east of Rock Springs.

These cliffs are massive!

Coming up on Point of Rocks. I find this name highly amusing. I had a friend in college who graduated from a Wyoming high school. She told me that the short bus is primarily used as the main buses because of the small amount of kids in the area. I told her that wasn't going to stop the short bus jokes.

Ladies, and gentlemen: the Point of Rocks.

Sometimes my camera really impresses me.

Funny, that butte looks more red than black to me.

This whole trip has been filled with roadgeek-worthy items. There's abandoned roadways, old alignments, sign goofs, tunnels, everything! I wish I would have been able to explore some more.
