Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

1 year anniversary mega-trip

The r-dub site has been online one year as of 5/12/06, and I thought it best to celebrate with another roadtrip. I planned this one out before leaving home, and just kept going until the batteries in my camera were dead and the memory card in my camera almost full. What I was left with was a ton of pictures and a car with an additional 720 miles on it. Okay, maybe this trip was a little too long...

Goin' up to North Park to have a little fun.

Now that the car is full, the stomach is full, and the unexpected passenger is gone, let's head towards Walden. Once there, there's two more ends we can grab while we're here.

339For the most part, SH 14 just weaves through gulleys and ridges on its way to Walden. When it isn't weaving, there's not a lot happening.

340Where the rightmost 1-2 feet of roadway has really fallen apart, CDOT has come through and patched it using dirt. At this rate, SH 14 will be completely dirt within the next year or two.

341Reassuarance shields are placed every 10 miles or so on 14.

342Here's a great sight: Rocky Mountain National Park from the northwest.

343A quick turnoff to get to Rand. Not that there's anything in Rand, mind you.

344Looking off to the northwest.

345The elephant man of speed limit signs. "Don't look at me, I'm an animal!"

346Someone had good aim or was really close. You could actually see blue through the sign.

347Still rolling along. We've started to curve more east than northeast.

348Slowing down to intersect SH 125.

349This has to be the worst case of sign rot I've seen on a sign in Colorado.

350Looking south down SH 125. You remember what's at the end there, right? That was end #12 from a few pages back.

351Also the name of my bathroom when the toilet overflows.

352Multiplexed state highways. The highways are together for about 1.5 miles.

353Standard greeting sign for small towns in Colorado.

354This sign is kinda misleading. It sits on a left curving intersectin, so you may be tempted to turn right onto the small residential street. Also, SH 14 turns right in about a block, not right away.

355Hmmm. I think Cowdery isn't going to be more important than Fort Collins, although that's the way this sign implies.

356Beautiful downtown Walden.

357That's a lot of 2's. Symmetry in towns. You don't see that often.

358By the way, I've elected to continue going straight on 125 for a bit.

359Old bridge with an asset tag that reads B 11 A.

360125 goes straight through the heart of North Park.

361Fabulous Cowdery. Told you it wouldn't beat out Fort Collins.

362This is the lowest asset tag I've ever seen for anything in Colorado. I wonder if it's the absolute lowest.

363Guess what? We're approaching yet another END! (#16)

364SH 127 is the through route while SH 125 turns.

365Let's follow 127 for a while, what say you?

366A distance sign. 127 does not pass through any established towns in Colorado.

367Whoops! Wrong color banner!

368127 is quite a winding road. This is one of the rare times where it's straight.

369Approaching a small canyon.

370This refers to the small canyon we just went through. Must not have been a popular king.

371I kept looking for playgrounds, but I didn't see any.

372Maybe CDOT meant these rocks were the slide issue? :)

373The END! of SH 127 happens right at the border of Colorado and Wyoming. That's a WYDOT truck sitting there welcoming traffic, by the way. The border is just before the blue Adopt-A-Highway sign.

374Welcome to Wyoming!

376CO SH 127 turns into WY SH 230. Just ahead there's a parking area that I pull off into to turn around. Guess what? Our friend Mr. Bee from Rabbit Ears Pass has been in the back seat regaining his strength! He starts buzzing around my head just as I pull into the parking area, so I stop, shoo him out of the car once and for all (again to the delight of any passing driver: nothing like a grown man running from a bee!), and hop back in to continue the trip.

377Another wrong colored banner! What's interesting here is that the couple of reassuarance shields along 127 have the right color banner. I wonder why the initial ones don't.

378Colorado apparently doesn't hold 127 in as high regard as Wyoming does 230.

379Welcome to Colorado! Enjoy the sun in your eyes for a while!

380Approaching that slide area we saw earlier. Interesting that it isn't signed as a slide area this way.

381Another case of advertising a curve when it's too late. At least this time there was advanced warning plus this sign.

382A shot of Kings Canyon (also not signed this way).

383Approaching the southern end of 127.

384What the heck is this?

385The last few feet of SH 127. Another end sans end sign.

386We've turned onto NB 125 again. While we're here, we might as well catch the end of this highway, too.

387Speaking of the end, here it is! Photographed lovingly under one dark cloud.
