memorial weekend drive-a-round
In assembling my Colorado State Ends section, I realized I was missing some ends (Duh!), most notably in the Arkansas River Valley from the Front Range east. So, since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I thought I'd honor my American right to drive around aimlessly.
East or Bust!
Popping into Pueblo, CO for a bit now. We'll skirt the north and east sides of the city and continue on east.
At the intersection just before the I-25 interchange. Note how wide the bridge is in order to have sufficient sight lines from the offramps.
OK, a few things here. 1. Check out the flashers on the mast arm. 2. US 50 actually turns onto SB 25 here, even though there's no mention of it heading eastbound. 3. The bridge has I-25 etched into its abutment. ...
It's a good thing that clearance is so high since it's almost impossible to read that sign when you're approaching it at a high clip.
I think these are the ugliest sound walls I've encountered. Maybe it's the pink color, which was brighter in person.
In order to not affect the neighborhood to the south of here, the eastbound on and off ramps are in an urban diamond configuration.
Shot from the parking area to the northeast of the intersection. This used to be US 50 before the bypass was put in.
Looking down 231. There is a reassuarance shield present just after the intersection. I was too slow on the shutter.
231 has the Arkansas River marked, where 233 did not. US 50 is on the north side of the Arkansas while Business 50 is on the south.
This stretch of 50/96 is separated by a cement barrier which ends in this not-so-safe way for each driveway and cross street.
And where there's been development, the road is split like this. Shouldn't that be a double yellow line there?
Approaching the split of US 50 and SH 96. The Pueblo Chemical Depot is home to one of the biggest stockpiles of mustard gas and the means to carry such gas.
There's some type of test center along SH 96. I'll have to come back down here one of these days and check that out.
At the US 50/ SH 96 intersection. At this point, US 50 heads to the south banks of the Arkansas River, while SH 96 stays to the north of it.
