Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

memorial weekend drive-a-round

In assembling my Colorado State Ends section, I realized I was missing some ends (Duh!), most notably in the Arkansas River Valley from the Front Range east. So, since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I thought I'd honor my American right to drive around aimlessly.

East or Bust!

Popping into Pueblo, CO for a bit now. We'll skirt the north and east sides of the city and continue on east.

223Approaching US 50 again from SH 45. The JCT and End plates should be on top.

224The last few feet of 45. I like how there's no control city for EB 50.

227Inside Pueblo now, heading east on US 50.

229Approaching I-25. This interchange was redone in the early 2000's. It's now a SPUI.

230At the intersection just before the I-25 interchange. Note how wide the bridge is in order to have sufficient sight lines from the offramps.

231OK, a few things here. 1. Check out the flashers on the mast arm. 2. US 50 actually turns onto SB 25 here, even though there's no mention of it heading eastbound. 3. The bridge has I-25 etched into its abutment. ...

232... 4. This is the BEGIN!ning of SH 47.

233I guess this would be a problem, considering the entire intersection is under the bridge.

234A tight offramp to the Pueblo Mall resides just east of I-25.

235It's a good thing that clearance is so high since it's almost impossible to read that sign when you're approaching it at a high clip.

236I think these are the ugliest sound walls I've encountered. Maybe it's the pink color, which was brighter in person.

237The first reassuarance shield.

238In order to not affect the neighborhood to the south of here, the eastbound on and off ramps are in an urban diamond configuration.

23947 loses its highway status just after the second interchange.

240However, there's plenty of room for expansion when its deemed necessary.

241A subtle oops. Can you see it?

242Approaching the US 50/SH 96/SH 47 interchange. Goodbye 47!

243WB SH 96 continues where 47 leaves off, but we're going to turn left here.

245A railroad underpass on US 50/SH 96. Is something missing here?

247The Arkansas Valley is full of short state highways. Here's one of them now.

248A little oops here at the intersection. SH 233 heads south, not east.

249Heading south on 233.

250233 goes over this old bridge about halfway between its ends.

251The final few feet of SH 233. There's no end sign around here.

252Shot from the parking area to the northeast of the intersection. This used to be US 50 before the bypass was put in.

253Heading south on 233 now.

254This direction even gets a distance marker!

256Approaching US 50/SH 96 again.

257There's no end sign present here, either.

258Continuing east on US 50/ SH 96, we qquickly approach our next endpoint: SH 231.

259There's even less at this end than at either end of SH 233.

260Looking down 231. There is a reassuarance shield present just after the intersection. I was too slow on the shutter.

261231 has the Arkansas River marked, where 233 did not. US 50 is on the north side of the Arkansas while Business 50 is on the south.

262Approaching the Business Junction of 50. Is the real junction further down the road? ;)

263The southern END! of SH 231. Again, no end sign is present.

264How SH 231's southern end looks to EB Bus 50.

265Heading north on SH 231.

266This mini-mile marker is how all of these lesser state highways are marked.

267At the northern end of SH 231. Again, no end sign is present.

269Heading east on US 50/SH 96 again. Methinks the arrow is a little superfulous.

270A row of the best protected mailboxes you'll ever see.

271This stretch of 50/96 is separated by a cement barrier which ends in this not-so-safe way for each driveway and cross street.

272And where there's been development, the road is split like this. Shouldn't that be a double yellow line there?

273Approaching the split of US 50 and SH 96. The Pueblo Chemical Depot is home to one of the biggest stockpiles of mustard gas and the means to carry such gas.

274SH 96 leaves US 50 through a usual T intersection that's just heavily advertised.

275There's some type of test center along SH 96. I'll have to come back down here one of these days and check that out.

276At the US 50/ SH 96 intersection. At this point, US 50 heads to the south banks of the Arkansas River, while SH 96 stays to the north of it.
