Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

memorial weekend drive-a-round

In assembling my Colorado State Ends section, I realized I was missing some ends (Duh!), most notably in the Arkansas River Valley from the Front Range east. So, since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I thought I'd honor my American right to drive around aimlessly.

A bunch of starts and stops while exploring

Still headed east on US 50. We're going to be exiting, crossing, and entering 50 a lot on this page because of all of the random state highways.

I guess we're on a detour now.

Approaching a split in the road. That's a pretty well endowed median on that sign.

Another case of "Use whatever sign blank you have".

Where US 50 meets up with its business route.

Typical shot of US 50 from Pueblo to Lamar.

Approaching our next state highway end.

The southern END! of 209. This intersection is in the middle of a blind curve. I was fully expecting to get rear-ended while waiting for traffic to clear.

The first few feet of SH 209.

A mere 1.5 miles after starting, SH 209 ends at SH 96.

No end sign is present here, either. But we get the snazzy directional across the intersection.

Heading back south to US 50.

A rare find! An old white information sign.

cA close up on that white sign. This sign is at least 25 years old.

Approaching US 50.

The last few yards of SH 209.

Entering Fowler, CO.

At the intersection of US 50 and SH 167.

A beheaded railroad signal and a really old sign. I'll have a better shot of the sign soon.

Dueling signs!

A shot of the northern END! of SH 167.

This is another in a strig of connector state highways.

Alright! Finally an END! sign.

Heading east on SH 96 approaching SH 167. There's no 167 shield this way, although you can tell there's one when you're traveling westbound.

At the northern end of SH 167.

Looking south down SH 167. 167 is an anomaly in the state highway system. Miles increase when traveling southbound, not northbound as usual.

Anyone in need of a llama? I found some!

As promised earlier, here's the old sign on the side of the railroad crossing. Metal sign, raised letters. Great find.

At the intersection of US 50 and SH 167. 167 continues south, so we will, too.

About two blocks after the intersection with US 50, 167 turns west.

Then after about one mile, 167 heads south again.

Reassuarance shield and cool looking tree.

Then, out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a small airfield to keep it company, SH 167 ends.

A close up of the end shield for SH 167.

Looking at the BEGIN!ning of SH 167.

The closest close-up of a state highway shield you'll get from me. The tag, which reads 3/06, shows the installation month and year for this sign. This guy's pretty darn new.

Retracing our path back to US 50.

Bets on how old the Radar Patrolled sign is?

A brand new signal installation.

Back heading east on US 50.

Here we go again! Another connector state highway is just ahead.

At the US 50/SH 207 intersection. Note how the sign assembly goes over the sidewalk.

Really old railroad crossing on SH 207. This is about one block north of US 50.

SH 96 has curved northwards now, so this highway is a little longer than 167.

The Ordway State Correctional Facility is about 4 miles east of here.

Approaching SH 96 and the northern END! of SH 207. Nope, no end sign.

Heading east on SH 96, we find this interesting specimen. What's with the arrows, anyways?

Heading back to the northern end of 207 on 96.
