Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

memorial weekend drive-a-round

In assembling my Colorado State Ends section, I realized I was missing some ends (Duh!), most notably in the Arkansas River Valley from the Front Range east. So, since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I thought I'd honor my American right to drive around aimlessly.

Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam...

We have gone from the Arkansas Valley due north on SH 71 into the vast range lands of eastern Colorado. When I say there's not a lot out here, I don't kid around.

380Approaching SH 94 on SH 71. SH 94 is a straight east-west highway that goes from Colorado Springs to US 40.

381I've mentioned Punkin Center on multiple pages on this site, now we get to see it too!

382At the intersection of SH 71 and SH 94. Let's see here. I have a full tank of gas still, and some daylight left. The east end of 94 is only a few minutes east of here. Let's do it!

384Once we turn east on 94, we're reminded again that US 40 is all torn up.

385Yet another reminder. That must be some massive reconstruction.

387SH 94 shares one major feature of SH 71: a whole lotta nothing around it.

390A shot of where we're going to be in a few minutes.

391Approaching an intersection.

392Lincoln County 109 used to be SH 109 before it was turned back. Note the 109 sign: this is in the same design as the Colorado State Highway shields used to be. You think CDOT/CHD did this on purpose?

393The weeds on the side of the road came up to the glass on the passenger side of the car.

394A sign specimen on a county road off of 94.

395At the intersection of SH 94 and CR 43. The CO HWY 63 part of the sign symbolizes when CR 43 used to be SH 63. According to Matt Salek, it's been over 50 years since this sign was true.

396Entering Cheyenne County and turning slightly to the north.

398Random railroad crossing out here.

399Those of you who have traveled with me on another plains trip will recognize this crossing as one that's completely similar to one on SH 86. We must be pretty close to US 40.

400Yep, we must be close to US 40. The speed limit hasn't dropped since the SH 71 intersection.

401Approaching US 40/287.

402The last few yards of SH 94.

40394's last few feet are in cement. Since 40/287 is part of the Ports to Plains Trade Corridor, it's been rebuilt as a cement super-2 from Limon to Lamar. (Probably further south than that: that's as far as I've explored)

404Who you gonna call? NOBODY!

405How far east are we onto the plains? Well the song "Home on the Range" comes to mind, especially when you actually get to see the antelope playing.

406On 40/287 heading south approaching SH 94.

407I'M BLIND!!! If you could read this, it'd say: 40 straight, 287 straight, 94 right.

408Taking advantage of the slight southern angle 94 is on at its beginning, I'm able to get the shot of the BEGIN!ning of 94 in the late afternoon sun.

409This is a state highway with a reason behind its number. Namely, the 94th infnatry division.

410Glad I filled up with gas when I did. There's a whole lot of nothing between here and Colorado Springs.

411Pretty sure the pics on this trip are through. Thanks for tagging along!
