Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

birthday 3-1 trip

Another year has passed in the life of r-dub. Guess it's time to celebrate with another road trip. I've got a hankerin' for some pass hopping. Let's see where these roads will take me this time, shall we?

Passin' the passes

This page finds us in the heart of Crested Butte, CO. We'll look around here for a bit, then it's back to work for us.

Let's start this page out with a good sign goof. "Distric"? Come on, CDOT.

Here is the northern END! of SH 135. Not that you'd know that from any sembalance of signage.

Mmmmmmmmmm.... pancakes.

A shot of Crested Butte's Central Business Distric.

Since the state highway has ended, I guess we'll follow the Scenic Byway for a while.

I was going to stop and ask for a portrait, but I thought better of it.

At the western edge of Crested Butte. These people actually had the cajones to glare at me when I had to drive by them on the wrong side of the road.

Good to know the pass is open. I hate to double back. And why do I think that the porta-tree is one of the barriers used when the pass is closed?

Another notice about the status of another pass. GCR 12's west end is at SH 133.

At a fork in the road. Damn litterbugs, leaving their silverware laying around like that...

We don't get the luxury of asphalt for a while now.

Another mile marker. I guess I was right a few pages back when I said that there was an excess of Mile 8 signs.

There are a few places for recreational parking.

Great views here, too.

Turn here to get to Grandma's house.

Looking back at where we were. It's a little curvy here.

A sign marking an old cemetary. At one time, people were just dying to get in there.

At the summit of Kebler Pass. I'm not sure why this road would need to be closed over the winter season, since there really isn't any severe grades or punishing altitudes.

Heading down the west side of Kebler Pass.

This side even gets guardrails! Snazzy!

This mountain will be quite photogenic for a while.

Heads up for the wildlife!

New bridge here.

Colorado is really living up the the "Colorful Colorado" slogan this year.

So, in other words, nothing is really changing.

The one lane part the sign was warning us about.

We aren't really descending anymore. Just curving around a lot.

I think this trip will win the record of "Most Cattle Guards Traversed."

Entering a massive aspen grove.

I can only imagine what this part of the drive looks like in the fall when the aspen leaves are golden.

We're still on the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway, by the way.

I'd check this out, but I'm afraid of getting lost.

Just in case you didn't believe me, here's sign proof that we're still on the Scenic Byway.

Still in an anti-quad zone.

Watching the world go by.

Relaxation levels increasing.

This mountain is named Marcellina Mountain and stands at 11,348 feet.

Who's Ruby, and why did she get a trail named after her?

Kebler Pass Road curves around Marcellina Mountain...

...and then drops into the valley seen in the background.
