Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

jonesin' for a roadtrip 3

Well, it's time for me to hit the road again. I'm getting bogged down at work again, and it'll help me out if I take off and clear my mind. This is a big trip, and it'll be a bit before we hit home again. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the pictures!

One more mountain pass

We're about to head up Hoosier Pass, which will be the last pass we take on this trip. After this, we'll enter the South Park region of Colorado.

496Time for some switchbacks. Bets on how many times this house has been hit?

497Well, at least it's not raining any more. Too bad the road is a little slick on the corners.

499And, as typical of mountain pass driving, we're about to get stuck behind the slower moving vehicle.

500Cable rail guardrails aren't just used in interstate medians.

501At the summit of Hoosier Pass.

502The Forest Service's Continental Divide sign in all its glory.

503More mountain guide signs for your viewing enjoyment.

504These are the mountains that last sign was referring to. They're in there somewhere.

505While the north side of Hoosier Pass is quite curvy, it's essentially a straight shot down the south side.

506Looking down at where we'll be in about 5 minutes.

507Dropping below the lower level of clouds.

508Still descending.

509I don't think there's another pass in Colorado where the base of the pass is so well defined.

510Just after Hoosier Pass lies the town of Alma. (Alma means Apple in Hungarian, by the way)

511Hint to all who travel through here: follow the speed limit. There's always an officer sitting in the middle of Alma and Fairplay, the next town.

512Entering the heart of Alma.

514Off-center county road marker.

515Sawing down the old power poles. Interesting way to do this. I thought the old poles would have just been pulled out of the ground.

516About to enter Fairplay.

517Remember: follow the speed limit here!

518Fabulous Fairplay.

519There's Fairplay's finest, being all neighborly and such.

520SH 9 jumps onto US 287 for a bit.

521Another bike route 76 sign. BR 76 follows 9 for its entirety.

5229 turns off ahead. The multiplex here is just about a mile long.

523SH 9 travels through some seriously flat lands now. Keep in mind we're still at about 8000 feet, though.

524A fun, fast ride awaits us.

525Lots of ranch land up here.

526Wooden bridge rail sporting a fresh coat of paint.

527No, this guy's not driving off the road. They pulled "over" to take picts of the buffalo just off the right side of the road. My pic didn't come out, unfortunately.

528The big curve ahead leads us to our next major intersection, ...

529... US 24.

530SH 9 multiplexes again here. If you want to see what happens on the way to Buena Vista, check out my Jonesin' for a Roadtrip 1 page.

531Heading east for a bit.

532I think the size of the post office sign correlates to the size of the post office here.

533Nobody knows the trouble I've seen. Nobody knows the sorrow...

534Since I'm such a glutton for punsihment, we're going to stay on 9.

535See, I could head home here, but where's the fun in that? :)

536I still don't understand this region's infatuation with the narrow version of the FHWA font.

537Uhmmm, I think this sign's missing something.

538CDOT can't seem to make up its mind about the spelling of the first town here. Sometimes it's Guffey, sometimes Guffy. It's Guffey, so you know.

539After all that flat land driving, it's time to get back into the hilly stuff.

540Oh, sure. Now that the sun's starting to set, the clouds part. Can't win on this trip.
