Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

Scary bridge

Along the old alignment of US 85/87 lies a railroad crossing. The railroad crosses over Old US 85/87 (now called Spruce Mountain Road), a side street, and a creek. Normally, this isn't a big thing--this happens all the time. However, what makes this crossing unique is the state of the bridges. I wouldn't want to be under this bridge as a train goes over it!

Bridge of Doom

Take a look, if you dare...

b001Approaching the bridge on Spruce Mountain Road headed north.

b002Now you can see the state of disrepair this railroad bridge is in.

b003This is the northern landing of the bridge. Spruce Mountain Road is in the background.

b004I risked life and limb to climb up under the northern landing spot to get you these next few pics. Remember that when you ask yourself "What's the point of this pic?"

b005Looking at where the tracks actually touch ground again.

b006Looking from under the bridge at the intersection of Spruce Mountain and whatever the name of the side street is.

b007Back down on solid land, we look south along the bridge.

b008Now a closer shot of the southern landing point. The southern side of the bridge seems to be in worse shape than the northern side.

b009That's a bridge design style we don't see anymore. Since this road far predates Interstate 25, this bridge is at least 50 years old.

b010Back to the railroad bridge. This is another shot of the southern side.

b011Another shot of the northern part of the bridge. I wasn't able to get any shots from the other side of the bridge because of the sun.

b012Back driving on Spruce Mountain, we see an up-close shot of the southern bridge supports.

b013A shot as I drove by. There's a fair mix of steel and wood here. I wonder if the wood trestle used to span all of this, but it has been partially replaced by the steel bridge.
