"We're on the road to nowhere..." -Talking Heads
As I wander this earth and remember to take my camera, I'll start to fill this page with my journeys. I try to keep all of my trips under one tank of gas, but since I drive a car that gets about 35 miles to the gallon (BWAHAHAHA!!!), I can travel quite some distance from my home base in Colorado Springs, CO. As it stands right now, I have tons of travelin' under my belt, but not many pictures. This page will continue to grow as my forays into the world are documented. Keep an eye on the homepage's updates box for news. Sections with new pictures in them will have this grey background.
Colorado highway 67 is a great drive. starting in Sedalia on the front range, it ends in Wetmore. Along the way, it travels south and west through Deckers, Woodland Park, Divide, Cripple Creek, Victor, and Florence. CO 67 used to be one continuous route between these two cities. Today, there are breaks in the route from Rampart Range Road to Deckers, then from Victor to US 50. These sections are still usable as county roads. I traveled this route from north to south on April 23, 2005. Drive time: 4+ hours. Miles: around 130.
Off to Denver. I had to go to Denver on August 22, 2005 for a meeting with a bloke from the Colorado Enterprise Fund, a startup financing assistance orginization here in Colorado. Of course, he wasn't there, but it doesn't mean I didn't get pictures of the trip. Also got some great coffee, as usual, at Calder's. (I explain more when you click on the link.)
License Plate Renewal 2005. My license plates were about to expire, so I grabbed my camera, proof of insurance, and my checkbook and wandered up to the DMV. Join me on a very convoulted tour of Colorado Springs.
Gold Camp Road. On an overcast day in early June 2006, I thought it would be fun to take a trip down this road, made famous by Theodore Roosevelt's quote "the trip that bankrupts the English language." What came out of my camera that day weren't that many roadgeeky shots. There were some scenic ones, though. Check it out!
Quick Denver Trippin'. I had a few hours to kill one autumn day, so I decided to meander up to Denver to check out the newly-completed TREX project. I then kept going north to see the new HOV/HOT lane configuration and to catch a sign goof in it's natural habitat. Then, back down the way I came.
DIA->COS. Okay, kids, it's time to get rolling yet again. This time, I got the dubious honor of driving my boss to the airport. This boss was making twice what I was making, working a third as hard, and got to go home to Cincinnati three weeks out of every month. Nice work if you can get it, I guess. Well, not being one to pass up an opportunity, I decided to roadgeek on the way home. Let's get rolling, shall we?
Okay, so gas prices are high. Big deal. I'm jonesin' for a roadtrip and nothing's going to stop me. Even getting stuck in a thunderstorm at almost 12,000 feet. And I've taken waaaaay too many pictures of it. Join me on a photo journey of US 24, CO 82 (in its entirety!), I 70, US 6, and a few other roads. You know you wanna.
So I got a new toy! A Fuji FinePix E550 Camera! This thing is so much... well... more than the old camera I had. I felt the urge to get out and put the camera through its paces. I'm pretty happy with the results, and I think you'll be too.
I've got that itch for a roadtrip again. And considering the weather here has been anything but winterlike, I think I can do it. Hop in, and we'll go wandering.
I realized the other day that I had covered every cardinal direction except south from Colorado Springs. I guess it's time to fix that with a Southern Figure-8 Tour.
To celebrate the one year birthday of the r-dub site, I decided to go on a mega-trip. The damage: 525 pictures, 3 sets of batteries dead, and 720 miles on the car. Ouch.
Memorial Day 2006. Gotta take advantage of my American right to wander around aimlessly and capture some pics in the process. There's a lot of roadgeeking to see and do for those of you who choose to tag along.
July 3, 2006. 30 years to the day that I've been on this earth. Before celebrating with friends, I decide to take a trip over never traveled roads in the state. Somewhere along the way I forgot how to turn the camera off, so I just kept taking picture after picture after picture.... I just couldn't stop until the camera was full. It's a lot of pics, so get your beverage of choice, get comfy, and start clickin'. You'll be happy you did.
It's been a rough one at work. No matter what I try, I feel the coffee shop I'm managing is taking a downward slide. I need to regroup. You know what that means! ROADTRIP! Jonesin' for a Roadtrip 3 is now online. You wanted to see Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the US, didn't you?
March 16, 2007: So my life over the last few months has been stressful. I'm trying to open my own coffee shop, and keep running into roadblocks on the financial side. Banks not returning my calls, my credit rating getting tons of queries thus making me look unfavorable to other banks, former employees who said they would come with me jumping ship because of how long this is taking, and more and more "no"'s from more and more people. I'm stressed. Tremendously. So how to solve the stressed issue? Roadtrip! Make it a long one (total of 15 hours on the road), visit old stomping grounds, and just relax. It's what the doctor ordered.
May 8, 2007: I was asked to accompany The Skirt's mom and young sister on a trip to see her family in Boise, ID. Since I didn't have anything going on at the time, and I rarely will turn down a roadtrip, I said yes. We had to compromise the roadgeek's credo of exploring the roads to get the five year old there and back as quickly as possible. On the way up, we traveled mostly at night, so I only have one picture of the trip up. On the way back, though, we left at 6am. The picts show the trip back.
July 3: 2007: Another year has passed in the life of r-dub. Guess it's time to celebrate with another road trip. I've got a hankerin' for some pass hopping. Let's see where these roads will take me this time, shall we?
Jonesin' for a Roadtrip 4. Alrighty, netizens, it's time to hit the road again. This time, I have a spare few hours to get out and about. This time, we're going the back way into Denver, seeing the Tiniest Town in Colorado, and having a cuppa coffee before running out of daylight. Let's go, shall we?
August 3, 2008. Well, I haven't been able to go out on many long trips recently, so I thought I'd just entertain you with a local trip. Bishop's Castle is something started by John Bishop in monument to his wife. His final goal will be a castle which will rival any Disney Princess'es castle. Sure, he has a way to go, but considering this is one man doing this, I'm impressed. After the castle, we'll travel on Colorado's only unpaved state highway.
May 26, 2008: Finally got hitched! After a wonderful wedding on the 24th, The Ring and I headed out to see what we could find. Our goal was simply to see stuff and be back by the 10th of June. Along the way we found out that, yes, we can survive in the car together for extended periods of time, we have the same sense of humor, and that we share the same habit: roadgeekery. Match made in heaven! Here I present our journey in photos. There's a mix of roadgeekery, tourist stuff, and general things. Enjoy our trip!
Honeymoon Wanderings: Day 1 :: Day 2 :: Day 3 :: Day 4 :: Day 5
September 8, 2009: Got an extra day off from my coffee shop, so that means it's time to hit the road! Headed east at first (not a good idea because it was early morning), then made my way south down the Ports to Plains Corridor until Oklahoma. On the loop back, I even got the chance to take an old alignment! Come check it out!
The Cimarron Street bridge over Conejos Street and railroad tracks has really seen better days. With no real money in the budget, crews are forced to implement emergency/temporary measures each time part of the bridge fails. When a three-foot hole formed in the deck of the bridge on August 9, 2006, another temporary fix is in the works. Check out what state this bridge is really in with this exposé.
There was a large grass fire down the street from my house today, April 17, 2006. I thought I'd get out to take a look-see. These aren't that roadgeeky, but good pics nonetheless.
Up on Old US 85/87, which is also known as Spruce Mountain Road, lies the town of Larkspur. Just to the south of Larkspur lies this scary-looking bridge. Don't know about you, but I'm not sure I want to be under that bridge when a fully loaded coal train rolls by.
Nestled against the foothills on the western edge of the City of Colorado Springs lies a free park called Garden of the Gods Park. This city-run park is a great place to hang out, wether you're a tourist or a local. I've put some pics online of it. They're more scenic than roadgeeky, but they're still nice to look at.
February 14, 2006: Part of I-70 in Kansas is closed because a semi's load does significant structural damage to a bridge. Yeah, that's an understatement. How does that happen, anyways?
I take pictures. Lots of 'em. Some don't fit into certain categories I have posted on this site. This is where they end up. (Page 1)

All of the picts in this page are mine and mine alone unless otherwise noted. Remember, kids: stealing is bad, mmmm-k? I get quite pissy if things are taken without telling me. I don't like to be pissy. You won't like it either. If you want to link to this page, that's fine. Please shoot me an email beforehand so I can link to your page as well. K? Thanks. --Ryan
